There's a little witch in all of us

Am I a witch? Firstly, what is a witch? "A witch is a practitioner of witchcraft. Traditionally, "witchcraft" means the use of magic or supernatural powers to inflict harm or misfortune on others"~Thanks wikipedia.com

Well no wonder so many people feel that being a witch is a bad thing! Identifying yourself as a witch can feel like a big step, I was fortunate enough and never really had to come out as a witch, most of my circle already knew, maybe even before I did. And to no surprise, I come from a line of women that are naturally "gifted" with what I would call a natural intuition.

There is something about saying "I am a witch" out loud, to another person, that comes with an overwhelming sense of fear. I believe this to be residual energy passed down from another life, when we were persecuted for being witches. This fear of being known is our witch wound. Don’t worry though, we have the ability to heal this wound and grow from it. I go further into this topic in my post “The Witch Wound, and How to Heal it.”

Modern witchcraft is easy and you can fly under the radar if you want. It's little things, like lighting certain colored candles depending on what you want to manifest, or wearing a smokey quartz crystal to protect yourself from negative energy. Setting intentions and making moon water at night, and burning incense or sage to balance energy in your home, are all great examples. These are things that I came to realize were "witchy", but just seemed to feel and look normal. For some of us, finding our niche in the witch world can help us develop our craft, for others like myself, who is an eclectic witch, we gather from the different types and build a craft that feels right to us.

So what are the different types? There are many, I will go over the most "common" types, you might find that you feel more connected to one type more than the others, or may feel drawn to a little bit of all. The is no right or wrong way. So let’s explore…

Green Witches

  • Connected to Earth & Nature, loves hiking and nature walks.

  • Plant Lady, probably has a jungle of houseplants.

  • Green Thumb, she is the person you give your dying orchid to, and somehow she not only brings it back to life, but it is blooming.

  • Gardening comes easy to them, they can grow vegetables so big they could be entered in the county fair.

  • Following the seasons, her attitude often reflects the seasons, full of growth and innovation in the spring, sunny and happy during the summer, always on the go, finishing up projects in the fall and maybe canning all those veggies she grew during the summer. Maybe experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder (vitamin D helps) in the winter, maybe napping a lot, think hibernation.

Crystal Witches

  • Has a large collection of Crystals that she has bought or found.

  • Knows the healing properties of each crystal she owns, and has plans to collect more.

  • She may carrying multiple crystals in her bra (so they are close to her heart chakra)

  • May use a crystal grid in her practice, and own a copy of The Crystal Bible, a Definitive Guide to Crystals by Judy Hall.

  • Plans a yearly pilgrimage to the Arizona Gem Show

Kitchen/ Hearth Witches

  • Can be found in the kitchen cooking up a delicious comfort meal, or new recipe.

  • Easily makes food from scratch, incorporates her magic into the meals that she makes, with love. Grandma's around the world, I'm looking at you!

  • Uses herbs and seasonings in each meal, some times for flavor, sometimes for healing properties, think chicken noodle soup, or peppermint tea.

  • Motto should be "Crock Pots are just electric Cauldrons."

  • Her home is a sacred space and the heart of her craft.

Cosmic Witches

  • When first meeting someone asks you if you know your exact birth time and place, and then creates a Natal Chart for you.

  • Plans their magic around celestial events.

  • Talks about mercury retrograde and what house it is moving into, and lets you know what you should expect depending on your sun sign.

  • Maybe follows Cosmic Drifters on Instagram, and owns a few of their clothing items.

Elemental Witches

  • Natures four elements of fire, water, air and earth are used during their craft, and maybe even incorporates the four directions of North, South, East, and West. Think of the scene in the 1996 witch cult classic movie ,The Craft, when Sarah, Bonnie, Rochelle, and Nancy are on the beach calling on Manon through their elements and directions, bestowing gifts associated with each to their deity to gain power. If you haven't seen it, go watch it right now! If for no other reason besides witches, the 90's aesthetic is giving.

    • A fire witch feels energetic at a bonfire, maybe a little bit of a firebug when camping and stoking the fire keeping it big. She most likely can see images in the flames, much like the Red Witch of GOT, or at least goes into a meditative state staring into the flames.

    • A Water or Sea witch feels in her element when swimming, or feels at peace when she is near a river or lake. She probably owns a boat named the S.S. Aquaholic, or does water aerobics for fun. She may use tools found near water, or even collect water itself for her practice.

    • An Air witch can be caught outside during of a thunderstorm, feeling the electricity in the air. Tornadoes and hurricanes interest her. She loves flying a kite, or sky diving. Even riding a motorcycle and feeling the wind against her face, all enliven her spirit.

    • An Earth/Green witch walks around barefoot almost all the time. She loves mud masks, mud bathes, at the spa. You can find her in her yard gardening, and digging in the dirt. She might be pulled in the direction of an environmentalist, and could easily be seen up a tree, protesting against deforestation. She believes that we are mother earths warriors.

Hearth/Home Witch

  • Uses the home as a sacred space. Their magic is in the way they decorate and paint, bringing comfort and protection all around them. They have unsuspecting alter spaces throughout their homes. They are home-bodies, some may call them hermits, because they would rather be home than go out. Cleaning or tidying up is almost like a hobby and brings them comfort and joy. Now that I think about it, my little sister falls into this category.

Eclectic Witch

  • This witch doesn’t just follow one type or tradition of the craft, but form their own unique practice by using what calls to them. An example would be a witch that loves to garden and be outside, and has lots of plants all around her house. And she also uses crystals for protection, and uses them for divination, but also reads tarot and loves the calming effect of water.

No matter the type of witch you are lovey, I want you to know that I am happy you are here. This plain of existence that we share needs your unique light. I hope this serves you well & as always,

Lumine Lunae Ductus-

May you be guided by the light of the moon
